The plant commonly called Sthal Padma / Land Lotus is usually the shrub Hibiscus mutabilis. It’s popular in India and Bengal because its flowers change color (white → pink → deep pink). You can grow it successfully in a pot with the right care. 🌺
1. Choose the Right Pot
- Use a large pot (14–18 inches diameter) because the plant grows like a shrub.
- Ensure good drainage holes.
- Clay or cement pots work best.
2. Soil Mix
Sthal padma likes loose, fertile soil.
Good mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost or vermicompost
- 20% river sand
- 10% cocopeat
This keeps the soil nutritious and well-drained.
3. Propagation (Best Method)
The easiest way is stem cutting.
Steps:
- Take a 6–8 inch semi-hard stem cutting from a healthy plant.
- Remove lower leaves.
- Dip the cut end in rooting hormone or aloe vera gel (optional).
- Plant it 2–3 inches deep in moist soil.
- Keep the pot in partial shade for 10–15 days.
Roots usually develop in 2–3 weeks.
4. Sunlight
- Needs 5–7 hours of sunlight daily ☀️
- Morning sun is ideal.
- Too little sun = fewer flowers.
5. Watering
- Water when the top soil feels dry.
- Do not keep soil waterlogged.
- In summer: every 1–2 days
- In winter: 2–3 days
6. Fertilizer
Feed every 15–20 days:
- Vermicompost
- Mustard cake liquid fertilizer
- Banana peel fertilizer (for flowering)
7. Pruning
Prune lightly after flowering:
- Keeps plant bushy
- Encourages more flowers
