Red Philip Id Lotus Tuber(length 15-30cm)
lotus from a tuber at home, and it’s actually easier than growing lotus from seed. The most important thing is to avoid burying the growing tip too deeply.
🌱 How to grow lotus from tuber
1. Choose the right container
- Use a wide, round container rather than a deep narrow pot.
- For one normal lotus, around 40–60 cm wide is a good starting size.
- It should have no drainage holes because lotus needs standing water.
2. Add heavy soil
Use heavy clay/garden soil, not normal loose potting mix.
A simple mix:
- 70–80% heavy garden/clay soil
- 20–30% well-rotted compost or vermicompost
Avoid a very airy mix containing lots of cocopeat/perlite because it tends to float and make the water muddy.
3. Plant the tuber correctly
This is the most important part.
- Put about 10–15 cm of soil in the container.
- Lay the lotus tuber horizontally on the soil.
- Keep the growing tip/bud above or just barely covered by soil.
- Don’t bury the entire tuber deeply.
- You can place a small stone over the middle of the tuber to hold it down, while keeping the growing tip exposed.
4. Add water slowly
Initially, add only about 2–5 cm of water above the soil.
As the lotus grows, gradually increase the water level to roughly 10–20 cm above the soil for a young plant.
For larger mature lotus, the water can be deeper depending on the variety and container.
☀️ 5. Give lots of sunlight
Lotus is a full-sun plant.
Aim for:
6–8+ hours of direct sunlight daily.
A sunny terrace, balcony, courtyard, or rooftop is ideal.
💧 6. Don’t change the water frequently
You don’t need to empty the container every few days.
Instead:
- Top up water when it evaporates.
- Remove dead/yellow leaves.
- Keep the water relatively clean.
- Avoid disturbing the soil and tuber.
🌸 When will it flower?
If you have a healthy tuber and good sunlight, you may see leaves relatively quickly, but flowering can take several weeks to a few months, depending on variety, temperature, sunlight and the tuber’s condition.
