Growing Purple Oxalis (Oxalis triangularis) from bulbs (actually small tubers/rhizomes) is easy, and it rewards you with striking purple leaves and delicate pink or white flowers.

1. Choose a pot and soil

  • Use a pot with drainage holes.
  • Fill it with a light, well-draining potting mix.
  • You can mix:
    • 2 parts potting soil
    • 1 part perlite or coarse sand

2. Plant the bulbs

  • Plant the bulbs about 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) deep.
  • Space them 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart if planting several together.
  • If you’re unsure which side is up, don’t worry—they usually find their way.

3. Water after planting

  • Water thoroughly once after planting.
  • Then keep the soil slightly moist, not soggy.
  • Avoid letting the bulbs sit in water, as they can rot.

4. Provide light

  • Place the pot where it gets:
    • Bright, indirect light, or
    • Morning sun with afternoon shade.
  • Too much hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.

5. Temperature

  • Ideal temperature is 15–25°C (59–77°F).
  • Protect from frost.

6. Fertilize

  • Once leaves appear, feed every 3–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
  • Stop fertilizing if the plant goes dormant.

7. Dormancy (important)

Purple oxalis naturally goes dormant after several months of growth.

  • Leaves may turn yellow and die back.
  • Reduce watering and let the soil dry.
  • Store the pot in a cool, dry place for 4–8 weeks.
  • Resume watering afterward, and fresh leaves will emerge.

If planting outdoors

  • Grow in well-drained soil.
  • Choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade in hot climates.
  • In areas with cold winters, lift the bulbs before frost or grow them in containers.

Growth timeline

  • 1–2 weeks: Shoots begin to emerge.
  • 3–6 weeks: Full foliage develops.
  • 6–10 weeks: Pink or white flowers usually appear.
