Hybrid Madhumalti (Hybrid Rangoon Creeper) is a vigorous flowering climber grown for its large, colorful, fragrant flower clusters. It generally needs the same care as regular Madhumalti but often flowers more heavily if given enough sun and nutrients.

Light

  • Give 6–8 hours of direct sunlight every day.
  • In very hot regions, afternoon shade is acceptable, but full sun produces the most flowers.

Soil

Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix such as:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% compost or well-rotted cow manure
  • 20% river sand
  • 10% cocopeat

The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (around 6.0–7.0).

Watering

  • Water deeply when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry.
  • During summer: every 1–2 days in pots (depending on heat).
  • During monsoon: water only if the soil starts drying.
  • During winter: reduce watering.

Avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy, as it can cause root rot.

Fertilizer

For abundant flowering:

  • Every month: 1–2 handfuls of vermicompost or compost.
  • Every 15–20 days: a balanced NPK fertilizer (such as 19:19:19) at the recommended dilution, or a flowering fertilizer with slightly higher phosphorus.
  • You can also add a small amount of bone meal or rock phosphate every 2–3 months.

Support

Hybrid Madhumalti is a climber and needs support such as:

  • Trellis
  • Pergola
  • Fence
  • Arch
  • Strong bamboo stakes

Tie young shoots gently until they start climbing on their own.

Pruning

  • Prune after the main flowering season or in late winter.
  • Remove dead, weak, and tangled branches.
  • Trim long vines by about one-third to encourage fresh growth and more flowers.

Pot Size

  • Start with a 12–14 inch pot.
  • Eventually move to an 18–24 inch pot if you want long-term container growth.
