Thuja / Morpankhi (Thuja occidentalis ‘Sherwood Frost’) can be grown nicely in a pot, but it needs good drainage, sunlight, and regular trimming to maintain its shape.
🌿 How to grow Thuja ‘Sherwood Frost’ in a pot
1. Pot size
- Start with a 10–12 inch pot with drainage holes.
- As the plant grows, shift to a 16–20 inch pot.
- Use a heavy pot if possible because the plant can become top-heavy.
2. Potting mix
Use a loose, well-draining mixture:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% cocopeat
- 20% compost/vermicompost
- 10% sand or perlite
Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.
3. Sunlight ☀️
- Give 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.
- Morning sunlight is particularly good.
- In very hot weather, protect it from harsh afternoon sun, especially when the plant is young.
4. Watering 💧
- Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of soil becomes dry.
- Don’t keep the soil continuously wet.
- Make sure excess water drains completely from the bottom.
5. Feeding 🌱
- Add a small amount of compost/vermicompost every 6–8 weeks during active growth.
- Avoid excessive feeding because it can encourage weak, uneven growth.
6. Pruning ✂️
‘Sherwood Frost’ looks best when lightly trimmed to maintain its compact shape.
- Remove dry or damaged branches.
- Trim lightly rather than cutting deeply into old, bare wood.
- Regular light trimming helps maintain a dense appearance.
7. Temperature
It prefers cool to moderate conditions. In hot Indian summers, keep the pot in a location with good morning sun and some protection from intense afternoon heat.
