Growing Shampoo ginger from a bulb (more accurately, a rhizome) is fairly easy if you provide warmth, moisture, and rich soil.
1. Choose a healthy rhizome
- Pick a firm, plump rhizome with visible buds (“eyes”).
- Avoid shriveled, moldy, or soft pieces.
2. Plant it
- Use well-draining, fertile soil rich in compost.
- Plant the rhizome 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) below the soil surface.
- Lay it horizontally with the buds facing upward.
- Space plants about 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart if planting in the ground.
3. Provide the right conditions
- Light: Partial shade to filtered sunlight. Morning sun is ideal.
- Temperature: Best between 20–35°C (68–95°F). Protect from frost.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Humidity: High humidity encourages vigorous growth.
4. Fertilize
- Mix compost into the soil before planting.
- Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) or organic compost.
5. Be patient
- Shoots usually appear within 2–8 weeks, depending on temperature.
- The plant develops lush green stems during the warm season.
6. Harvest
- After about 8–10 months, the distinctive red cone-like flower heads appear.
- Gently squeeze the mature cones to collect the fragrant, clear gel, which is traditionally used as a natural shampoo and conditioner.
