Sahadevi, botanically known as Vernonia cinerea, is a small, hardy herb that grows well in containers. It can reach around 30–60 cm depending on growing conditions.
🪴 1. Choose a pot
- Use a 6–10 inch pot for one plant.
- Make sure it has good drainage holes.
- A wider pot is useful if you want the plant to spread naturally.
🌱 2. Soil mix
Use a loose, well-draining mixture:
- 40% normal garden soil
- 30% compost or vermicompost
- 20% cocopeat
- 10% coarse sand/perlite
Avoid heavy soil that stays wet for long periods.
🌰 3. Growing from seeds
Sahadevi is usually easiest to grow from seeds.
- Sprinkle the seeds over moist soil.
- Cover them with only a very thin layer of soil.
- Keep the soil lightly moist.
- Place the pot somewhere with bright light.
- Seeds generally sprout within 1–3 weeks under suitable conditions.
- Once seedlings develop several leaves, keep the strongest plant and remove overcrowded seedlings.
☀️ 4. Sunlight
Give it around 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Morning sunlight is particularly good.
💧 5. Watering
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry.
- During hot weather: check frequently.
- During rainy weather: reduce watering.
- Don’t keep the pot constantly soggy.
🌿 6. Feeding
Once every 4–6 weeks, add a small amount of compost or vermicompost around the plant. Sahadevi doesn’t need heavy feeding.
✂️ 7. Pruning
Pinch the growing tips when the plant becomes tall or leggy. This encourages more branching and a bushier plant.
🌸 Flowering
With sufficient sunlight, Sahadevi produces small pinkish-purple flower clusters. Allow some flowers to mature if you want to collect seeds for the next crop.
