Bitter groundcherry / Rasbhari (Physalis minima) is a small, fast-growing fruiting plant that can grow very well in a pot. It is related to cape gooseberry, but the fruits of P. minima can have a more bitter or tart taste.
🌱 Growing Rasbhari in a pot
1. Choose the pot
- Use a 10–12 inch pot for one plant.
- Make sure it has several drainage holes.
- A 12–15 inch pot will give a larger plant and better fruiting.
2. Soil mix
Use a loose, well-draining mixture:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost/vermicompost
- 20% cocopeat
- 10% sand/perlite
Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.
3. Planting
- Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep.
- Keep the soil lightly moist.
- Seeds generally germinate in around 1–3 weeks under warm conditions.
- Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant the strongest one into the final pot.
4. Sunlight ☀️
Give it 5–7 hours of direct sunlight daily. More sunlight usually means better flowering and fruit production.
5. Watering 💧
- Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry.
- Water thoroughly until some water comes from the drainage holes.
- Don’t keep the soil continuously wet.
During very hot weather, check the pot more frequently.
6. Feeding
Every 20–30 days, add a small amount of compost or vermicompost around the plant.
Once flowering starts, you can use a fertilizer with relatively more phosphorus and potassium and avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce lots of leaves but fewer fruits.
7. Support
The plant can become bushy and somewhat sprawling. A small bamboo stick or support can help keep the branches upright, especially when they become loaded with fruit.
🍒 Flowering & fruiting
Small yellowish flowers appear first, followed by fruits enclosed inside a papery husk. Allow the husk to turn yellow/brown and dry naturally before harvesting.
