Black ginger (Kaempferia parviflora), also called Thai Black Ginger or Black Galangal, is a tropical herbal plant grown mainly for its dark purple-black rhizomes.

Light

  • Provide 50-70% filtered sunlight or bright indirect light.
  • Morning sun (2-4 hours) is beneficial.
  • Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Temperature

  • Ideal: 20-35°C
  • Protect from temperatures below 10°C.
  • During winter, the plant naturally becomes dormant.

Soil

Use a loose, well-draining mix:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% river sand or coarse sand
  • 20% compost or vermicompost
  • 10% cocopeat or leaf mold

The soil should never remain soggy.

Watering

  • Water only when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry.
  • During the rainy season, water less if the pot is already moist.
  • In winter dormancy, water very sparingly—just enough to prevent the rhizome from drying out.

Fertilizer

Feed every 20-30 days during active growth:

  • Vermicompost: 1-2 handfuls per 10-12 inch pot.
  • You can also use diluted seaweed extract or balanced organic fertilizer once a month.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which produces more leaves than rhizomes.

Pot Size

  • Start with a 12-14 inch wide pot.
  • Ensure several drainage holes.
  • Rhizomes spread horizontally, so a wide pot is better than a deep one.

Humidity

  • Prefers 60-80% humidity.
  • During very hot weather, occasional misting around the plant (not constantly on the leaves) can help.

Dormancy

From late autumn or winter:

  • Leaves gradually turn yellow and dry.
  • This is normal.
  • Stop fertilizing and reduce watering.
  • Leave the rhizome in the pot or store it dry until spring.

Harvest

  • Rhizomes are usually ready 8-10 months after planting.
  • Harvest after the leaves have completely dried.
