Black ginger (Black ginger), also called Thai black ginger or Krachai Dam, is grown from rhizomes (underground stems often called “bulbs”). It thrives in warm, humid conditions similar to turmeric and ginger.

1. Choose healthy planting material:
  • Use firm, healthy rhizomes with at least one visible bud (“eye”).
  • Avoid shriveled, moldy, or soft pieces.
  • If the rhizome is large, cut it into sections with 1–2 buds each and let the cut surfaces dry for 1–2 days before planting.

2. Prepare the soil

Black ginger prefers:

  • Loose, well-drained soil
  • Rich in organic matter
  • Soil pH around 5.5–6.8

A good potting mix:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% compost or well-rotted manure
  • 30% coarse sand or cocopeat

3. Plant the rhizome

  • Plant during spring or early monsoon.
  • Place the rhizome 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) below the soil surface.
  • Position the bud facing upward.
  • Space plants 20–30 cm apart if growing in the ground.

4. Light

  • Bright shade or partial sunlight is ideal.
  • Morning sun and afternoon shade work well.
  • Avoid harsh midday sun.

5. Watering

  • Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
  • Water whenever the top 2–3 cm of soil begins to dry.
  • Reduce watering when the leaves naturally die back.

6. Fertilizing

Apply:

  • Compost every 4–6 weeks, or
  • A balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or similar) at half strength once a month during active growth.

7. Temperature

Ideal range:

  • 20–35°C (68–95°F)
  • Protect from frost and temperatures below about 10°C.

8. Harvesting

  • Rhizomes are usually ready 8–10 months after planting.
  • Harvest once the leaves turn yellow and dry.
  • Carefully dig up the rhizomes without damaging them.
