Rajnigandha (tuberose) bulbs are easy to grow if they get plenty of sun, well-drained soil, and moderate watering.
1. Choose healthy bulbs
- Select firm, healthy bulbs without mold or soft spots.
- Larger bulbs usually flower sooner than small ones.
2. Best planting time
- In most parts of India, plant from February to July.
- Warm temperatures (20–30°C) are ideal for growth.
3. Prepare the soil
Use a loose, well-draining mix:
- 60% garden soil
- 20% compost or vermicompost
- 20% river sand
The soil should not hold excess water, as bulbs can rot.
4. Plant the bulbs
- Plant 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) deep.
- Keep the pointed end facing upward.
- Space bulbs 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
5. Sunlight
- Give the plant 5–6 hours of direct sunlight every day.
- More sunlight usually means better flowering.
6. Watering
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Then water only when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry.
- Avoid waterlogging.
7. Fertilizer
- Apply compost once a month.
- You can also use a balanced NPK fertilizer (such as 8-8-8 or 10-10-10) every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
8. Flowering
- Rajnigandha usually blooms 90–120 days after planting.
- Remove spent flower spikes to keep the plant healthy.
