Turmeric (Haldi) is considered a symbol of purity, prosperity, and good fortune.
Common uses include:
- Tilak
- Mix a small amount of turmeric powder with a few drops of water (or sandalwood paste).
- Apply a small tilak on idols or on your forehead.
- Turmeric Paste
- Mix turmeric powder with water to make a thick paste.
- Apply it to:
- Coconut
- Kalash (sacred pot)
- Betel nuts
- Puja utensils (in some traditions).
- Akshata (Sacred Rice)
- Mix a pinch of turmeric powder with raw rice.
- Allow it to dry.
- Offer this yellow rice during prayers or blessings.
- Drawing Auspicious Symbols
- Mix turmeric with water and use it to draw symbols such as swastika or Om near the entrance or on the puja plate, according to your tradition.
- Ganesh and Lakshmi Puja
- Turmeric is commonly offered along with kumkum, flowers, incense, fruits, and sweets.
For Cooking
Turmeric adds color, flavor, and contains the compound curcumin.
Common ways to use it:
- Dal: ¼–½ teaspoon while boiling.
- Vegetable curries: ¼–½ teaspoon while sautéing onions or vegetables.
- Rice: Add ¼ teaspoon while cooking for yellow rice.
- Soups: A small pinch for flavor and color.
- Golden milk: Mix ¼–½ teaspoon turmeric powder into a cup of warm milk. A pinch of black pepper can help improve curcumin absorption.
- Marinades: Mix with ginger, garlic, salt, and spices for vegetables, paneer, fish, or meat.
