Rice flour is very versatile and can be used for cooking, baking, skincare, and even gardening. Here are the most common uses:
1. Cooking & Baking
- Thickener: Add 1–2 tablespoons to soups, gravies, curries, or sauces to make them thicker.
- Gluten-free baking: Use it to make cakes, cookies, pancakes, muffins, and bread (usually mixed with other gluten-free flours).
- Crispy coating: Coat vegetables, fish, chicken, or paneer before frying for a crisp texture.
- Indian dishes: Used in recipes such as:
- Rice roti (Akki Roti)
- Puttu
- Kozhukattai (Modak)
- Murukku
- Chakli
- Rice dosa and appam
- Snacks: Used in namkeen mixtures, pakoras, and fritters.
2. Homemade Rice Flour Porridge
Mix:
- 2 tablespoons rice flour
- 1 cup water or milk
Cook over medium heat while stirring for 5–7 minutes. Sweeten with jaggery or sugar if desired.
3. Face Pack (External Use)
Mix:
- 2 tablespoons rice flour
- 1 tablespoon yogurt or milk
- ½ teaspoon honey (optional)
Apply for 15–20 minutes and rinse with water. It can help gently exfoliate the skin.
4. Gardening
Rice flour can be composted in small amounts or mixed into compost piles as an organic material. Avoid applying large quantities directly to plant roots, as it may encourage mold.
