Long Pepper/Piper Longum/Pippali Healthy Herbal Live Plant

Long Pepper (Piper longum / Pippali), it is a tropical perennial climber and can grow quite well in a pot at home.

🌱 How to grow Long Pepper

1. Pot

• Use a pot at least 12–16 inches wide and deep.
• Make sure it has good drainage holes.
• A larger pot will support better vine growth and fruiting.

2. Soil mix
Long pepper likes moist but well-draining, organic-rich soil.

A good mix:

• 40% garden soil
• 30% compost/vermicompost
• 20% cocopeat
• 10% coarse sand/perlite

Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.

3. Planting
If you have a healthy rooted cutting, plant it about 2–3 inches deep and firm the soil around it.

Long pepper is generally easier to propagate from stem cuttings than from seed.

4. Light

• Give bright filtered light / partial shade.
• Around 3–5 hours of gentle morning sunlight is excellent.
• Protect it from harsh afternoon summer sun, especially when young.

5. Watering
Keep the soil slightly and consistently moist.

• Water when the top 1–2 inches starts drying.
• Don’t let water remain in the saucer.
• During hot weather it may need more frequent watering.

6. Support
Long pepper is a climbing vine, so provide a:

• bamboo stick
• trellis
• moss pole
• wall support

Tie the young vine loosely as it grows.

7. Fertilizer
During active growth, feed every 3–4 weeks:

• vermicompost, or
• well-rotted cow manure, plus
• a small amount of neem cake

Once the plant becomes established, regular feeding helps with flowering and fruit production.

🌿 When will it produce pepper?

With a healthy established plant and suitable warm conditions, Piper longum can start flowering and producing its characteristic pepper spikes after it becomes mature. Fruiting is much better when the plant receives good nutrition, adequate moisture and suitable humidity.
