🌸 Lantana Camara – How to Grow in a Pot
Lantana camara is a hardy flowering plant that produces clusters of small, colorful flowers and can bloom for a long period in warm weather. It is well suited to pots, balconies, terraces and gardens.
🪴 Pot Size
- Start with a 8–10 inch pot for a young plant.
- For a mature plant, use a 12–16 inch pot.
- Make sure the pot has several drainage holes.
🌱 Soil Mix
Use a loose, well-draining mixture:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost/vermicompost
- 20% cocopeat
- 10% sand/perlite
Avoid heavy soil that stays wet for long periods.
☀️ Sunlight
Lantana loves full sunlight.
- Give it around 5–7 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- More sunlight generally means more flowers.
- In very hot weather, some afternoon protection can help if the plant is becoming stressed.
💧 Watering
- Water thoroughly when the upper 1–2 inches of soil feels dry.
- Allow excess water to drain completely.
- Don’t keep the soil constantly soggy.
🌿 Fertilizer
During active growth and flowering:
- Add compost/vermicompost every 3–4 weeks.
- A flowering-plant fertilizer can be used occasionally according to its label directions.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it can encourage leaves instead of flowers.
✂️ Pruning
Pruning helps keep the plant bushy and encourages new flowering shoots.
- Remove dry or spent flower clusters.
- Trim long, weak branches.
- After a major flowering flush, lightly cut back overgrown branches.
🌺 Flowering
With plenty of sunlight, regular watering and occasional feeding, Lantana can produce flowers repeatedly. Flower colors may include yellow, orange, pink, red, white and combinations of several colors.
