How to grow Kobra Fern in a pot
1. Pot
- Start with a 6–8 inch pot with good drainage holes.
- Move to a larger pot when roots fill the container.
- Avoid a very large pot because excess wet soil can cause root problems.
2. Soil mix
A good mix is:
- 40% cocopeat
- 30% fine compost/vermicompost
- 20% perlite or coarse sand
- 10% bark or leaf mould
The soil should hold moisture but never remain waterlogged.
3. Light
- Keep it in bright filtered/indirect light.
- Morning sunlight for about 1–2 hours can be okay.
- Avoid strong afternoon sun, which can burn the fronds.
4. Watering
- Keep the soil slightly moist at all times.
- Water when the upper 1–2 cm starts becoming dry.
- During hot weather, it may need watering more frequently.
- Don’t let the pot sit in collected water.
5. Humidity
Kobra Fern likes high humidity, ideally around 60–80%.
- Keep it near other plants.
- A humidifier works well.
- A pebble tray can help somewhat.
- Good air circulation is important, especially during the rainy season.
6. Temperature
For Indian conditions, approximately 18–32°C is comfortable. Protect it from very hot afternoon heat and cold drafts.
7. Fertilizer
During active growth, give a mild balanced liquid fertilizer once every 3–4 weeks. Don’t overfeed; ferns can be sensitive to concentrated fertilizer.
🌱 Propagation
Kobra Fern is usually easiest to propagate by dividing an established plant:
- Remove the plant from the pot.
- Separate sections with their own roots and growing points.
- Plant each section in a moist, airy potting mix.
- Keep in bright indirect light and high humidity until new growth appears.
