Paddy (rice) can be grown successfully in a pot/container, especially as a small ornamental or home-grown crop. You don’t need a traditional rice field.
🌾 How to grow paddy in a pot
1. Choose a container
- Use a 20–30 litre tub/bucket for a small crop.
- Prefer a container at least 25–30 cm deep.
- It should be able to hold water without leaking.
- For better results, use a wider container rather than a narrow pot.
2. Prepare the soil
A simple mix:
- 60% garden soil
- 20% compost/vermicompost
- 20% clayey soil
Rice likes moist, fertile soil. Don’t use a very loose, sandy mix.
3. Plant the seeds
- Soak good-quality paddy seeds in clean water for 24 hours.
- Keep them moist for another 1–2 days until they start sprouting.
- Plant the sprouted seeds about 1–2 cm deep.
- For a 25–30 L container, around 5–10 plants is reasonable.
4. Water management
This is the most important part.
- Initially keep the soil continuously moist.
- Once the plants establish, maintain approximately 2–5 cm of water above the soil.
- Don’t let the container completely dry.
- During very hot weather, check the water level daily.
You don’t need to keep very deep water in a home container.
5. Sunlight
Give the plant 6–8+ hours of direct sunlight daily.
More sunlight generally means stronger growth and better grain development.
6. Fertilizer
After establishment, you can give:
- Compost/vermicompost around the plants, or
- A small amount of balanced fertilizer every few weeks.
Avoid excessive nitrogen because it can produce lots of leaves but weaker plants.
