cashew plant starts producing much earlier than seed-grown plants and generally gives larger, higher-quality yields. With proper care, a grafted cashew can begin fruiting in 2–3 years, while seed-grown trees often take 5–7 years.

Climate

  • Best temperature: 20–35°C
  • Thrives in tropical and subtropical climates.
  • Can tolerate summer heat up to 40°C if well established.
  • Protect young plants from frost and prolonged waterlogging.

Sunlight

  • Needs 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • More sunlight results in better flowering and fruit production.

Soil

Use a well-drained sandy or loamy soil.

Ideal potting mix:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% river sand
  • 20% well-rotted compost or vermicompost
  • 10% cocopeat (optional)

Ideal pH: 5.5–7.0

Avoid heavy clay soil that retains water.

Pot or Ground Planting

In the Ground

  • Dig a pit about 2 × 2 × 2 feet.
  • Mix the excavated soil with 10–15 kg compost and 500 g neem cake before planting.
  • Space trees 7–8 meters apart.

In a Pot

  • Use at least a 24–30 inch (60–75 cm) container.
  • Drainage holes are essential.
  • Eventually, planting in the ground is better for maximum yield.

Watering

  • Water immediately after planting.
  • During the first year: 2–3 times per week, depending on weather.
  • Once established: water deeply every 7–10 days during dry periods.
  • Reduce watering during the rainy season.
  • Never allow water to stand around the roots.

Fertilizer

For young plants:

  • Every 45–60 days:
    • 2–3 kg compost
    • 200–300 g neem cake

For mature trees:

  • Before flowering:
    • 10–15 kg compost
    • Balanced NPK fertilizer if needed
    • Micronutrients (especially zinc and boron) if deficiencies appear

Mulching

Apply a 5–8 cm layer of:

  • Dry leaves
  • Paddy straw
  • Coconut husk pieces

Keep mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk to prevent rot.

Pruning

  • Remove dead, diseased, and crossing branches.
  • Shape the tree during the first 2–3 years to develop a strong framework.
  • Prune lightly after harvest.

Flowering and Fruiting

  • Flowers usually appear in the cool, dry season.
  • Fruits mature about 2–3 months after flowering.
  • Each cashew apple carries one cashew nut attached externally.
