Hybrid arecanut (Hybrid Supari, Areca catechu) is bred from selected parent palms for better yield, vigor, or disease tolerance. Its care is the same as other improved arecanut varieties, but good management during the first 3–5 years is essential for strong growth.
Climate
- Best temperature: 18–35°C
- Prefers a warm, humid climate.
- Avoid frost and hot, dry winds.
- Young plants need partial shade during the first 2–3 years.
Sunlight
- Young plants: 4–6 hours of filtered sunlight.
- Mature palms: Full sun is suitable once established.
Soil
- Deep, fertile, well-drained loamy or laterite soil.
- Ideal pH: 5.5–7.0.
- Never allow waterlogging, as roots can rot.
Planting
- Dig a pit about 60 × 60 × 60 cm.
- Mix the excavated soil with:
- 10–15 kg well-rotted cow dung or compost
- 1–2 kg vermicompost
- A little neem cake (optional)
- Plant at the same depth as in the nursery bag and water thoroughly.
Spacing
- Maintain 2.7 m × 2.7 m (9 ft × 9 ft) between palms for proper growth.
Watering
- First year: Water 2–3 times per week.
- Summer: Water every 2–3 days if there is no rain.
- Monsoon: Water only if rainfall is insufficient.
- Keep the soil moist but never soggy.
Fertilizer
For each plant per year:
- 15–20 kg compost or farmyard manure.
- Split NPK fertilizer into 2–3 applications (before monsoon, after monsoon, and late winter if needed).
- Mulch around the base with dry leaves or coconut husk to conserve moisture.
Mulching
Apply a 5–10 cm layer of:
- Dry leaves
- Coconut husk
- Straw
Keep mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
Weed Control
- Remove weeds every 1–2 months.
- Avoid digging deeply around the roots.
