Growing Dracaena Mahatma (often sold as Cordyline Terminalis ‘Mahatma’) indoors is quite rewarding—its deep burgundy-red foliage adds a bold, tropical feel. While often labeled as Dracaena, it’s actually closer to a Cordyline, and its care reflects that.
🌿 Light Requirements
- Prefers bright, indirect light
- Can tolerate partial shade, but colors may fade
- Avoid harsh direct sunlight (can scorch leaves)
👉 Best spot: near a window with filtered light (east or north-facing)
💧 Watering
- Keep soil lightly moist, not soggy
- Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry
- Avoid overwatering → root rot risk
⚠️ Tip: Use filtered or rainwater if possible—Cordylines are sensitive to fluoride/chlorine (common in tap water)
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal temperature: 18–27°C
- Avoid cold drafts (below ~15°C)
- Loves moderate to high humidity
👉 In dry rooms:
- Mist leaves occasionally, or
- Place a tray with water + pebbles nearby
🌱 Soil & Potting
- Use well-draining soil mix
- Potting soil + sand/perlite works well
- Ensure pot has drainage holes
Repot every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the pot
