Calathea Rattlesnake (Goeppertia insignis) is a tropical foliage plant known for its long, wavy leaves with dark green patterns and purple undersides. It grows very well in pots when kept warm, humid, and away from harsh sunlight.
🌱 How to grow in a pot
1. Pot
- Start with an 8–10 inch pot for a small/medium plant.
- Make sure it has several drainage holes.
- Move to a larger pot when roots become crowded.
2. Soil mix
Use a loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining mix:
- 40% cocopeat
- 30% compost/vermicompost
- 20% perlite
- 10% garden soil
The soil should stay slightly moist but never remain soggy.
3. Light
- Best: bright indirect light.
- Morning sunlight for a short period is okay.
- Avoid strong afternoon/direct summer sunlight—it can scorch the leaves.
- Too little light can make growth slower and leaf patterns less attractive.
4. Watering
- Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels slightly dry.
- Water thoroughly until some water drains from the bottom.
- Don’t let the pot sit in collected water.
Calatheas can be sensitive to hard/high-salt water, so filtered, rain, or settled water can be preferable if your tap water causes brown leaf edges.
5. Humidity
This is one of the most important requirements.
- Aim for around 60–70% humidity if possible.
- Keep it away from dry AC/fan airflow.
- A humidifier or grouping several plants together works better than constantly misting the leaves.
6. Temperature
- Ideal: around 18–30°C.
- Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
- In very hot weather, provide good ventilation and keep it out of direct sun.
