Calathea peacock / Peacock ginger is commonly associated with Kaempferia species, especially Kaempferia pulchra and related ornamental species. It is a rhizomatous tropical plant, so its care is somewhat different from regular Calathea.
1. Pot
- Start with a 6–8 inch pot for one healthy rhizome.
- Make sure the pot has several drainage holes.
- A wider, shallow pot works well because the rhizomes spread horizontally.
2. Soil
Use a loose, rich but fast-draining mix:
- 40% cocopeat
- 30% compost/vermicompost
- 20% garden soil
- 10% perlite, sand or fine coco chips
The soil should hold some moisture but never remain soggy.
3. Planting the rhizome
- Place the rhizome about 1–2 cm below the soil surface.
- Keep the growing buds facing upward.
- Water lightly after planting.
- Don’t bury it deeply, as excessive moisture around the rhizome can cause rot.
4. Light
- Best: bright filtered light / partial shade.
- Avoid strong afternoon sunlight.
- Gentle morning sunlight for 1–2 hours is usually fine.
- Too much direct sun can scorch the decorative leaves.
5. Watering
During active growth:
- Keep the soil slightly and evenly moist.
- Water when the upper layer starts becoming slightly dry.
- In heavy monsoon weather, reduce watering because the soil dries slowly.
6. Humidity
Kaempferia enjoys humid conditions, roughly 60–80% humidity.
You can keep the pot near other plants or use a humidity tray, but don’t leave the pot sitting directly in water.
🌿 Temperature
It prefers warm tropical conditions:
- Ideal: 20–32°C
- Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below about 15°C.
- In India, warm and humid weather is generally excellent for active growth.
🌱 Growing season & dormancy
This is important with Kaempferia.
During the active season, you will see:
rhizome → leaves → flowers → gradual leaf yellowing → dormancy
When the plant naturally starts losing its leaves:
- Reduce watering considerably.
- Keep the rhizome relatively dry.
- Don’t fertilize heavily.
- When new shoots appear again, gradually restart watering.
Don’t assume a leafless plant is dead—the rhizome can simply be dormant.
🌸 Flowering
With good conditions, Kaempferia can produce attractive flowers, often appearing close to the foliage or at soil level. Flowering is generally better when the plant receives bright filtered light, adequate moisture during active growth, and doesn’t remain waterlogged.
🌿 Fertilizer
During active growth, use a diluted balanced fertilizer once every 3–4 weeks.
You can also top-dress with a small amount of mature compost every couple of months.
