The Spider Hibiscus (also called Hibiscus schizopetalus) is a beautiful tropical hibiscus with hanging, frilly petals. It grows well in pots both indoors and outdoors if you provide the right conditions.
1. Pot & Soil
- Pot size: Start with a 10–12 inch pot with drainage holes.
- Soil mix: Use a light, well-draining mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost/vermicompost
- 20% cocopeat
- 10% sand or perlite
This prevents root rot and keeps the soil airy.
2. Sunlight ☀️
Spider hibiscus loves light.
Outdoor
- Keep where it gets 4–6 hours of direct sunlight.
- Morning sun is best.
Indoor
- Place near a south or east facing window.
- If light is low, the plant may grow leaves but produce fewer flowers.
3. Watering 💧
- Water when the top 2–3 cm soil feels dry.
- Do not keep soil constantly soggy.
- In hot weather: water every 1–2 days.
- In winter: 2–3 times per week.
Tip: Good drainage is very important.
4. Fertilizer 🌱
Feed every 2 weeks during the growing season.
Good options:
- Vermicompost
- Mustard cake liquid fertilizer
- Banana peel fertilizer
- Balanced liquid fertilizer (NPK 10-10-10)
This encourages flowering.
5. Pruning ✂️
- Light pruning keeps the plant bushy.
- Cut long branches after flowering.
- Remove yellow or weak leaves.
6. Temperature & Humidity
Spider hibiscus prefers:
- 18–32°C temperature
- Moderate humidity
If indoors, occasional mist spray helps.
