Camellia plants are beautiful evergreen shrubs known for their rose-like flowers. They do best in cool, humid climates with acidic soil.
🌱 Climate & Location
- Best in mild to cool climates
- Ideal temperature: 10–25°C
- Protect from:
- Hot afternoon sun
- Strong winds
- Frost (young plants)
🌤️ Light
- Bright, indirect light or partial shade
- Morning sun + afternoon shade is ideal
- Too much sun = leaf burn
- Too much shade = fewer flowers
🌿 Soil (Very Important)
- Needs acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5)
- Best soil mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% coco peat / leaf compost
- 20% sand or perlite
- 10% well-rotted manure
- You can also use ready-made azalea/camellia potting mix
💧 Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy
- Water when the top 2–3 cm soil feels dry
- Use rainwater if possible (tap water can be alkaline)
- Never let soil dry out completely
🌼 Fertilizer
- Feed during spring and early summer
- Use:
- Fertilizer for acid-loving plants (azalea, rhododendron)
- OR vermicompost + a little mustard cake solution
- Stop feeding after mid-summer
🌺 Flowering Tips
- Buds form in late summer–autumn
- Do NOT:
- Move the plant
- Prune heavily
- Let soil dry during bud formation
- Mulch with pine needles, leaf compost, or coco chips
✂️ Pruning
- Prune right after flowering
- Remove dead or weak branches only
- Heavy pruning reduces next year’s blooms
🪴 Growing in Pot
- Use a large pot with drainage holes
- Clay or ceramic pots work best
- Repot every 2–3 years, only one size bigger
