Hybrid hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis hybrids) are among the most rewarding flowering plants for containers. With proper care, they can bloom almost year-round in warm parts of India, especially from spring through autumn.

1. Choose the Right Pot

  • Young plant: 10–12 inch (25–30 cm) pot.
  • Mature plant: 14–18 inch (35–45 cm) pot.
  • Use a pot with several drainage holes.
  • Terracotta pots are excellent because they prevent waterlogging.

2. Best Potting Mix

A loose, nutrient-rich, well-draining mix works best.

Recommended mix:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% compost or well-rotted cow manure/vermicompost
  • 20% coarse river sand
  • 10% cocopeat or leaf mold

Add:

  • 1–2 handfuls of neem cake
  • A little bone meal or rock phosphate (optional) for better flowering.

3. Sunlight

Hybrid hibiscus needs:

  • 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily
  • Morning to afternoon sun is ideal.
  • In extremely hot summers (above 40°C), provide light afternoon shade.

4. Watering

  • Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry.
  • Never allow the pot to remain soggy.
  • During monsoon, water only if the soil begins to dry.

5. Fertilizer Schedule

Feed every 15 days during the growing season.

You can use:

  • Vermicompost (1–2 handfuls monthly)
  • Seaweed extract every 15–20 days
  • Banana peel fertilizer occasionally for potassium
  • Balanced NPK (19-19-19) at 1 g per litre once every 2–3 weeks
  • During heavy flowering, use a bloom booster like NPK 00-52-34 once a month.

6. Pruning

  • Remove faded flowers regularly.
  • Prune lightly after a flush of blooms.
  • Major pruning is best done in late winter or early spring to encourage bushy growth.

7. Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years.
  • Refresh the top 2–3 inches of soil each year with fresh compost.
