Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens)
Texas Sage is a drought-tolerant evergreen shrub with beautiful purple, pink, or lavender flowers. It is one of the easiest flowering plants to grow if you provide plenty of sunlight and avoid overwatering.
1. Sunlight (Most Important)
- Needs 6–8 hours or more of direct sunlight every day.
- Full sun produces the most flowers and keeps the plant compact.
- Too much shade results in fewer flowers and leggy growth.
2. Soil
- Requires well-draining sandy or gritty soil.
- Avoid heavy clay soil or waterlogged conditions.
- Potting mix:
- 50% garden soil
- 30% coarse sand
- 20% compost or cocopeat
3. Watering
- Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry before watering again.
- Do not keep the soil constantly wet.
Typical watering schedule (India):
- Summer: Every 3–5 days
- Monsoon: Water only when the soil is dry
- Winter: Every 7–10 days
4. Temperature
- Thrives in temperatures between 25–40°C.
- Loves hot weather and tolerates heat very well.
5. Fertilizer
- Feed lightly every 2–3 months.
- Use compost or a balanced fertilizer at half strength.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizers, as they encourage leaves instead of flowers.
6. Pruning
- Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a bushy shape.
- Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
- Avoid heavy pruning during the rainy season.
7. Flowering
- Texas Sage often blooms after rainfall or when humidity rises.
- It may flower several times a year under warm, sunny conditions.
8. Growing in a Pot
- Use a 12–16 inch pot with drainage holes.
- Place the pot in full sun.
- Ensure excess water drains out completely.
