Radermachera kunming is a rare ornamental tree from the Bignoniaceae family (the same family as trumpet vines). It is grown for its attractive glossy foliage and clusters of fragrant white trumpet-shaped flowers. In India’s tropical and subtropical climate, it grows well with proper care.

Light

  • Give 4–6 hours of morning sunlight or bright filtered sunlight.
  • In hot summers (above 38°C), provide afternoon shade.
  • Too much shade results in fewer flowers.

Temperature

  • Best: 18–32°C
  • Can tolerate up to around 38°C if watered properly.
  • Protect from frost and temperatures below 10°C.

Soil

Use a fast-draining, fertile mix:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% river sand
  • 20% well-rotted compost or vermicompost
  • 10% cocopeat or leaf mould

The soil should never remain waterlogged.

Watering

  • Water deeply when the top 2–3 cm of soil becomes dry.
  • During monsoon, reduce watering if rain is frequent.
  • During summer, water more often.
  • Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

Fertilizer

Feed once every 30–45 days during the growing season.
You can use:

  • Vermicompost (1–2 handfuls for a medium pot)
  • Mustard cake liquid (well fermented, diluted)
  • Seaweed extract once a month
  • Bone meal every 2–3 months to encourage flowering

Reduce fertilizer during winter.

Pot Size

  • Start with a 12–14 inch pot.
  • Repot every 2–3 years into a slightly larger pot.
  • Ensure the pot has good drainage holes.

Pruning

  • Remove dead or weak branches.
  • Light pruning after flowering encourages bushier growth.
  • Avoid heavy pruning before the flowering season.

Flowering

Flowers usually appear when:

  • The plant receives sufficient sunlight.
  • It is mature (often several years old).
  • It is not overfed with nitrogen.
