Growing an Amaryllis bulb is straightforward, and with proper care it usually flowers within 6–10 weeks after planting.

What you’ll need

  • A healthy, firm amaryllis bulb
  • A pot with drainage holes (about 2–5 cm / 1–2 inches wider than the bulb)
  • Well-draining potting mix
  • Water

How to plant it

  1. Fill the pot about halfway with potting mix.
  2. Place the bulb so that the top one-third to one-half of the bulb remains above the soil.
  3. Fill around the bulb, pressing the soil gently.
  4. Water lightly to settle the soil, but don’t soak it.

Light and temperature

  • Place the pot in bright, indirect sunlight or a sunny window.
  • Ideal temperature is 18–24°C (65–75°F).
  • Rotate the pot every few days so the flower stalk grows straight.

Watering

  • Water sparingly until new growth appears.
  • Once leaves or the flower stalk emerge, water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of soil feels dry.
  • Never let the pot sit in standing water, as bulbs can rot.

Fertilizing

  • After leaves appear, feed every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) diluted according to the label.
  • Stop fertilizing once flowering finishes if you plan to let the plant rest.

After flowering

  1. Cut off the faded flowers but leave the flower stalk until it yellows naturally.
  2. Keep the leaves growing—they replenish the bulb’s energy.
  3. Continue watering and fertilizing for 2–3 months.

Reblooming next year

To encourage another bloom:

  • In late summer or early autumn, gradually stop watering.
  • Let the leaves die back.
  • Store the bulb in a cool, dry place (about 10–15°C / 50–59°F) for 8–10 weeks.
  • Repot or refresh the soil, then begin watering again to restart growth.
