To keep a hybrid shiuli/parijat (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) healthy and flowering through the season:
1. Give it plenty of light
- Best: 5–6+ hours of direct sun daily.
- In very hot summers, light afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch.
- Too much shade = fewer flowers.
2. Use loose, fast-draining soil
A good pot mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost/vermicompost
- 20% coarse sand
- 10% cocopeat or leaf mold
Tips:
- Pot must have drainage holes
- Avoid heavy clay soil that stays soggy.
3. Water correctly
- Water when the top 1–2 inches feel dry.
- Keep soil slightly moist, not wet.
- In summer: water more often.
- In monsoon/winter: reduce frequency.
Warning:
- Yellow leaves + soft stem often mean overwatering.
4. Feed for blooms
During active growth (spring to autumn):
- Add vermicompost / cow dung manure every 3–4 weeks
- Or use a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10) every 4–6 weeks
For better flowering:
- Add a little bone meal / phosphorus-rich feed monthly during bud season.
Avoid:
- Too much nitrogen (causes leafy growth, fewer flowers).
5. Prune for shape and more branches
- Lightly pinch growing tips to make it bushier.
- Do main pruning after heavy flowering ends.
- Remove:
- dry branches
- weak stems
- crossed growth
6. Pot size matters
For hybrid/all-season types:
- Start with at least 12–16 inch pot
- Upgrade if roots circle or emerge from drainage holes
A root-bound plant may:
- stop growing
- drop buds
- flower less. Community growers in India also report better flowering in larger pots.
