Growing a healthy rose plant in a pot is totally doable—even indoors or on a balcony—if you get a few basics right.
🌹 1. Choose the Right Pot & Variety
- Pot size: At least 12–16 inches deep and wide
- Drainage: Must have holes at the bottom
- Rose types that work well in pots: Miniature roses, patio roses, or dwarf varieties
🌱 2. Soil Preparation
- Use well-draining soil mix
- Ideal mix:
- Garden soil (40%)
- Compost or cow dung manure (30%)
- Sand or cocopeat (30%)
- Soil should be loose, not compact
☀️ 3. Sunlight Requirement
- Roses need 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily
- Place near a sunny window, terrace, or balcony
💧 4. Watering
- Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry
- Don’t overwater (roots can rot)
- Water deeply until it drains out from the bottom
🌿 5. Fertilizing
- Feed every 2–3 weeks during growing season
- Use:
- Organic compost
- Liquid fertilizer
- Banana peel or tea compost (homemade options)
✂️ 6. Pruning & Deadheading
- Remove dead or dried flowers regularly
- Prune lightly to encourage new growth
- Major pruning is best done in winter (for India: Dec–Jan)
