Mango leaves and branches are considered highly sacred in Hindu rituals.
🌿 How Mango Leaves/Branches Are Used in Puja
- Kalash Decoration
- A kalash (copper/brass pot with water) is placed on the altar.
- 5 fresh mango leaves are arranged around the neck of the kalash.
- A coconut is placed on top.
- This setup represents the presence of gods and goddesses.
- Torana (Door Hanging)
- Mango leaves are tied in a row and hung at the main entrance of homes/mandaps during festivals (Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, weddings, housewarming, etc.).
- Purification & Ritual Use
- A mango twig (small branch with leaves) is dipped in holy water (Gangajal or sanctified water) and sprinkled around for purification before or during puja.
- Festival-Specific Uses
- Ganesh Chaturthi: Mango leaves are tied to the kalash for invoking Ganesha.
- Sankranti/Ugadi: Toranas of mango leaves mark new beginnings.
- Durga Puja: Mango leaves are used in kalash sthapana for Devi.
