The Vajradanti plant (Barleria prionitis), also known as Porcupine Flower, Vajradanti herb, or Philippine Violet, is a hardy, shrub native to India. It’s well known in Ayurveda for promoting oral health (the name Vajradanti literally means “as strong as a diamond tooth”).

  • Prefers: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Place it where it gets at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • If grown indoors, keep it near a bright south- or east-facing window.
  • Too little light = weak growth and fewer flowers.

💧 Watering

  • Water regularly but don’t overwater.
  • Keep soil evenly moist, not soggy.
  • Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry.
  • In winter, reduce watering frequency slightly.

💡 Tip: Vajradanti is somewhat drought-tolerant once mature, but young plants need consistent moisture.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs well-draining soil.
  • A good mix:
    • 2 parts garden soil
    • 1 part compost or cow dung manure
    • 1 part sand or perlite
  • Avoid heavy clay soils that hold water.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in warm climates (20–35°C / 68–95°F).
  • Cannot tolerate frost — bring indoors or cover during cold weather.
  • Moderate humidity is fine; it’s not fussy about air moisture.

🌸 Fertilizing

  • Feed once a month during spring to monsoon with:
    • Organic compost, or
    • A mild liquid fertilizer (NPK 10-10-10) diluted to half strength.
  • Avoid heavy feeding; this is a tough, low-maintenance plant.

✂️ Pruning

  • Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth.
  • Remove dry, old, or yellowing leaves regularly.
  • Light trimming also helps stimulate new shoots and more flowers.

🌼 Flowering

  • Flowers usually appear from late summer to winter.
  • Small, bright yellow-orange blooms form in clusters.
  • More sun = more blooms.

🌿 Propagation

  • Very easy to propagate from stem cuttings:
    1. Take a 4–6 inch cutting from a healthy branch.
    2. Remove lower leaves and dip the end in rooting hormone (optional).
    3. Plant in moist soil mix and keep in partial shade.
    4. Roots develop in 2–3 weeks.
