Thai jackfruit is a high-yielding variety known for producing large fruits with sweet, crisp flesh. A grafted Thai jackfruit plant can start fruiting in 2–4 years, while seed-grown plants usually take 6–8 years.

  • Temperature: 20°C–35°C (ideal)
  • Sunlight: Full sun, at least 6–8 hours daily
  • Rainfall: Thrives during the monsoon but needs good drainage.
  • Protect young plants from frost and strong winds.

Soil

Use fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5.

Ideal soil mix for pots:

  • 40% garden soil
  • 30% compost or well-rotted cow manure
  • 20% river sand
  • 10% cocopeat

Avoid heavy clay soil that stays waterlogged.

Pot Size

If growing in a container:

  • Start with a 16–18 inch pot.
  • Shift to a 24–30 inch (150–250 L) container as it grows.
  • Large containers are essential because jackfruit develops a strong root system.

Growing in the ground is best for maximum yield.

Watering

  • Water deeply 2–3 times per week during summer.
  • During monsoon, water only when the top 2–3 inches of soil become dry.
  • Never allow water to stand around the roots.

Fertilizer

Every 2 months

  • 2–5 kg well-rotted cow manure or vermicompost (depending on plant size)
  • 100–200 g neem cake

Every month

Apply an NPK fertilizer such as 19:19:19 or 10:26:26 according to the growth stage:

  • Young plant: 15–20 g
  • Mature plant: 50–100 g

Water after fertilizing.

Mulching

Add a 5–8 cm layer of dry leaves, straw, or coconut husk around the base.

  • Conserves moisture
  • Keeps roots cool
  • Improves soil health

Keep mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.

Pruning

  • Remove weak, dead, or crossing branches.
  • Maintain a height of 3–4 m for easier harvesting.
  • Remove suckers growing below the graft union.

Flowering and Fruiting

  • Flowers appear on the trunk and major branches.
  • Do not remove early flowers.
  • If many small fruits develop, thin some out so the remaining fruits grow larger.
