Growing a grafted Swarna Champa (also called Michelia champaca) in a pot is absolutely doable—but it needs the right balance of sunlight, soil, and care because it’s naturally a tree.
🌱 1. Choosing the Right Pot
- Start with a 12–16 inch pot (upgrade to 18–24 inch as it grows)
- Must have good drainage holes
- Use terracotta or cement pots (better airflow for roots)
🌿 2. Ideal Soil Mix
Swarna Champa hates waterlogging.
Best mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost (well-rotted cow dung/vermicompost)
- 20% sand (for drainage)
- 10% cocopeat
👉 Soil should be loose, well-draining, slightly acidic
☀️ 3. Sunlight Requirements
- Needs full sunlight (5–7 hours daily)
- In very hot areas, give light afternoon shade
💧 4. Watering
- Keep soil slightly moist, not soggy
- Water when top 1–2 inches feel dry
- Reduce watering in winter
⚠️ Overwatering is the #1 reason these plants die in pots
🌸 5. Fertilizing
Feed regularly for flowering:
- Every 15–20 days:
- Vermicompost OR cow dung manure
- Once a month:
- Liquid fertilizer (mustard cake solution or seaweed)
For better flowering:
- Add bone meal or phosphorus-rich fertilizer
✂️ 6. Pruning & Shape Control
- Since it’s grafted, it flowers earlier
- Prune lightly after flowering to:
- Maintain size
- Encourage branching
