Caring for a stevia plant (Stevia rebaudiana) is quite easy once you know what it likes — it’s a tender perennial herb from South America, prized for its naturally sweet leaves. It grows well both indoors and outdoors, as long as it gets warmth, sunlight, and well-draining soil.

  • Full sun is best — at least 6 hours of bright sunlight daily.
  • If growing indoors, place it near a south or west-facing window.
  • You can supplement with a grow light if natural light is limited.

💡 Without enough light, the plant gets leggy and produces fewer sweet leaves.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Stevia loves warmth: 20–30°C (68–86°F) is ideal.
  • It’s not frost-tolerant — bring it indoors before temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F).
  • Prefers moderate humidity, typical of most indoor environments.

🌱 Soil

  • Needs well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5–7.5).
  • Ideal potting mix:
    • 2 parts light garden soil or potting mix
    • 1 part sand/perlite
    • 1 part compost or coco coir for nutrients and aeration
  • Avoid heavy clay soils that hold water — roots can rot easily.

💧 Watering

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy.
  • Water when the top 1–2 cm (½ inch) of soil feels dry.
  • In hot weather, you may need to water more frequently.
  • Ensure good drainage — stevia hates “wet feet”.

🌿 Feeding / Fertilizing

  • Stevia is not a heavy feeder.
  • Feed once a month with a balanced, organic fertilizer (like 10-10-10) or compost tea during active growth (spring–summer).
  • Avoid over-fertilizing — too much nitrogen can make leaves less sweet.

✂️ Pruning

  • Regularly pinch off the top leaves to encourage bushy growth.
  • Don’t let it flower too early — once it flowers, the leaves lose sweetness.
  • You can harvest leaves anytime but best before flowering.

🌼 Harvesting & Drying

  • Harvest when the plant is mature — usually 2–3 months after planting.
  • Cut stems in the morning after dew dries.
  • Dry leaves in a shaded, well-ventilated area (not in direct sun).
  • Once crisp, store dried leaves in an airtight jar away from sunlight.
  • You can crush or powder them for natural sweetener use.

🪴 Potting & Repotting

  • If growing indoors, choose a pot at least 20 cm (8 in) wide with drainage holes.
  • Repot every spring to refresh soil and encourage new growth.
  • Stevia can live for 2–3 years but is often replanted yearly for best yield.
