The Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa), also called the Sacred Fig, is one of the most revered and beneficial trees in India. It’s considered sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, and it also has remarkable ecological benefits.
🌱 How to Plant a Peepal Tree
1. Choose the Right Location
- Needs full sunlight — at least 6–8 hours a day.
- Space: It grows very large, so plant away from buildings, walls, and pipelines.
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained, loamy soil; tolerates clay and sandy soils too.
2. Propagating
- Seeds: Collect fresh seeds from mature fruits.
- Clean seeds and soak overnight in water.
- Sow 1 cm deep in seed trays or directly in soil.
- Cuttings / Saplings: You can also plant small saplings bought from nurseries.
3. Planting Steps
- Dig a pit about 2×2 feet, mix soil with compost or organic manure.
- Place the seedling or seeds in the pit.
- Cover with soil and water gently.
- Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
4. Care & Maintenance
- Water daily for the first month, then 2–3 times a week.
- Fertilize with organic compost or vermicompost every 6 months.
- Prune dry branches to maintain shape and health.
- Protect from pests (like termites) naturally using neem oil or organic sprays.
