Cocopeat block (compressed coconut coir) is simple and great for both indoor plants and outdoor gardening because it improves soil aeration, retains moisture, and is lightweight.
1. Rehydrate the Cocopeat Block
Most cocopeat comes as a compressed brick/block, so you need to expand it.
Steps:
- Put the block in a large bucket, tub, or container.
- Slowly add warm water (about 4–5 liters for a 650 g block, but check the package).
- Wait 10–20 minutes.
- The block will expand and become fluffy soil-like material.
- Break it apart with your hands or a trowel.
Tip: One block can expand to 7–9 liters of cocopeat.
2. For Indoor Plants (Pots)
Cocopeat alone has very little nutrients, so mix it with other materials.
Good potting mix formula:
- 40% cocopeat
- 30% garden soil
- 20% compost/vermicompost
- 10% sand or perlite
Good for:
- Money Plant
- Snake Plant
- Aloe Vera
- herbs and small houseplants.
Fill the pot, plant your seedling, and water lightly.
3. For Outdoor Gardening
You can mix cocopeat into your garden soil.
Method:
- Loosen the top 6–8 inches of soil.
- Add 20–30% cocopeat.
- Add compost or organic manure.
- Mix everything well.
Benefits outdoors:
- Improves drainage
- Keeps soil moist longer
- Helps roots grow faster
4. For Seed Starting
Cocopeat is excellent for germinating seeds.
Steps:
- Fill seed trays with 100% cocopeat or cocopeat + vermicompost (80:20).
- Sow seeds.
- Keep slightly moist.
- Transplant once seedlings grow 2–3 leaves.
Great for vegetables like Tomato, Chili Pepper, and Coriander.
