🌵 Thimble Cactus (Mammillaria gracilis fragilis) Indoor Care Guide

🪴 Light

  • Needs: Bright, indirect sunlight or a few hours of direct morning sun.
  • Best spot: A south- or west-facing window is ideal.
  • Tip: Rotate the pot every few weeks to encourage even growth and prevent leaning.

💧 Watering

  • Frequency:
    • Spring–Summer (growing season): Water every 2–3 weeks, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.
    • Fall–Winter (dormant season): Water only once every 4–6 weeks, or even less if your home is humid.
  • Method: Water deeply, then let excess drain out. Never let the pot sit in water.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temp: 65–80°F (18–27°C).
  • Minimum temp: Not below 50°F (10°C).
  • Humidity: Prefers low humidity — avoid misting.

🌱 Soil

  • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • You can mix your own:
    • 2 parts cactus soil
    • 1 part perlite or pumice for extra drainage

🪴 Pot

  • Choose a terracotta or clay pot with drainage holes.
  • The porous material helps prevent root rot by allowing moisture to escape.

🌸 Fertilizer

  • Feed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus fertilizer (half-strength).
  • Don’t fertilize in winter.

✂️ Propagation

  • Very easy!
    • The small “thimble” offsets (baby clusters) can break off easily — just let them dry for 1–2 days and then plant in dry cactus soil.
    • Water sparingly until roots form.
