Krishna Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum var. Krishna) — the dark purple-leaved variety of holy basil.
1. How to Plant Krishna Tulsi
A. From Seeds
- Pot or garden bed: Choose a container or a garden spot with good drainage.
- Soil: Use loamy soil enriched with compost. Krishna Tulsi prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6–7).
- Sowing:
- Sprinkle seeds on top of moist soil.
- Cover lightly (1–2 mm) with soil.
- Water gently to avoid washing seeds away.
- Germination: Seeds sprout in 7–14 days. Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
- Sunlight: Full sun (6–8 hours/day) is ideal for bushy growth and dark leaves.
B. From Cuttings
- Take a healthy 4–6 inch stem.
- Remove lower leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone (optional), and plant in moist soil or water.
- Roots appear in 2–3 weeks, then transplant to pot or garden.
C. Care
- Watering: Moderate; avoid waterlogging.
- Pruning: Pinch leaves to encourage bushy growth.
- Fertilizer: Use organic compost or liquid manure once a month.
- Pests: Krishna Tulsi is naturally pest-resistant but can get aphids.
