Holy Basil, also called Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum / Ocimum tenuiflorum), is a sacred herb widely used in India.
1. How to Plant Holy Basil (Tulsi)
A. From Seeds
- Choose a container: Use a pot with drainage holes or plant directly in a garden bed.
- Soil: Well-draining, loamy soil is ideal. Mix garden soil with compost.
- Sowing seeds:
- Sprinkle seeds lightly over the soil.
- Cover with a thin layer (1–2 mm) of soil or sand.
- Water gently.
- Germination: Seeds sprout in 7–14 days. Keep soil moist but not soggy.
- Sunlight: Tulsi prefers full sun (6–8 hours/day).
B. From Cuttings
- Take a healthy 4–6 inch stem from an existing Tulsi plant.
- Remove lower leaves and place the cutting in water or moist soil.
- Roots develop in 2–3 weeks. Then transfer to a pot or garden.
C. Care
- Watering: Keep soil moderately moist; avoid overwatering.
- Fertilizer: Use organic compost or liquid manure monthly.
- Pruning: Regularly pinch leaves to encourage bushy growth.
- Pests: Usually pest-resistant, but watch for aphids and whiteflies.
