The Fairy Tale Cactus (scientific name: Austrocylindropuntia subulata ‘Crested’ or sometimes Cereus peruvianus monstrosus, depending on the variety sold under that name) is a unique, sculptural succulent cactus that can thrive indoors with the right care. 🌵✨

🌤️ Light

• Needs lots of bright light — ideally 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
• Place it near a south- or west-facing window.
• If natural light is limited, use a grow light for 10–12 hours per day.
• Avoid sudden moves from shade to bright sun — it can scorch.

💧 Watering

• Water sparingly!
  • Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
  • In summer: water about every 2–4 weeks, depending on humidity and temperature.
  • In winter: reduce to once a month or less.
• Always drain excess water; never let the pot sit in water.

🪴 Soil

• Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix.
• You can mix your own:
  • 2 parts potting soil
  • 1 part perlite or pumice
  • 1 part coarse sand
• Good drainage prevents root rot.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

• Prefers warm, dry air:
  • Ideal range: 65–85°F (18–29°C).
  • Tolerates cooler nights but avoid below 50°F (10°C).
• Low humidity is best — never mist the plant.

🌱 Fertilizing

• Feed lightly during active growth (spring & summer):
  • Use a cactus fertilizer or a diluted balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) once every 6–8 weeks.
• No feeding in fall or winter.

🌿 Repotting

• Repot every 2–3 years or when it outgrows its pot.
• Choose a terracotta pot with drainage holes.
• Handle carefully — wear gloves, as the spines can be sharp.

✂️ Pruning & Propagation

• Remove dead or damaged sections with sterilized scissors.
• For propagation:
  • Take a healthy stem cutting.
  • Let it callous over for a few days.
  • Then plant in dry cactus soil.
