Dragon Fruit (Pitaya) plant
🌱 How to Plant Dragon Fruit
1. Planting Material
- Use healthy stem cuttings (30–40 cm) from a mature dragon fruit plant
- Or plant from seeds (slower growth, takes 2–3 years to fruit)
2. Soil & Location
- Well-drained sandy loam or loamy soil
- pH: 6–7
- Full sun exposure (6–8 hours/day)
- Avoid waterlogging (roots rot easily)
3. Support Structure
- Trellis, pole, or fence (wooden or concrete)
- Tie stems loosely to support climbing
4. Planting Steps
- Prepare a hole 30–40 cm deep
- Mix soil with compost/organic manure
- Place cutting or seedling and cover with soil
- Water lightly but regularly for the first month
- Mulch around plant to retain moisture
5. Care & Maintenance
- Watering: Moderate, every 2–3 days; reduce in rainy season
- Fertilizer: Use organic fertilizers (vermicompost, neem cake, bone meal)
- Pruning: Remove old or weak stems to promote flowering
- Pest Control: Aphids, mealybugs, and stem rot can occur; use neem oil or biopesticides
6. Flowering & Fruiting
- Usually flowers within 6–12 months from cuttings
- Fruits appear 30–50 days after flowering
- Night-blooming flowers, sometimes need pollination (hand-pollination may increase yield).
