The China Doll Plant (Radermachera sinica) is a beautiful, glossy-leaved indoor plant native to Southeast Asia. It has delicate, fern-like foliage and can thrive indoors if you give it the right balance of light, water, and humidity.
🌞 Light
- Bright, indirect light is best.
- Place near a sunny window with filtered light (east or north-facing is ideal).
- Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch leaves, and low light, which can cause leaf drop.
💧 Water
- Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
- Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry.
- Always use a pot with drainage holes—this plant hates “wet feet.”
- In winter, reduce watering as growth slows.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal temperature: 18–24°C (65–75°F).
- Avoid cold drafts or sudden temperature drops.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity.
- Mist the leaves occasionally or use a humidity tray or humidifier.
🌱 Soil
- Use a well-draining potting mix, such as:
- 2 parts peat moss or coco coir
- 1 part perlite
- 1 part potting soil
- A general indoor plant mix with extra drainage also works well.
🍽️ Fertilizer
- Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer (like 10-10-10 or 20-20-20).
- Stop feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.
✂️ Pruning
- Regularly prune back leggy stems to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.
- Remove yellow or dead leaves to keep the plant tidy and healthy.
🌿 Repotting
- Repot every 2–3 years or when roots start circling the pot.
- Move up only one pot size at a time.
- The plant can be sensitive to disturbance, so handle roots gently.
