The Bunny Ear Cactus (Opuntia microdasys), also called the Polka-Dot Cactus or Angel’s Wings, is a cute, low-maintenance cactus perfect for indoor growing.
🌵 Overview
- Scientific name: Opuntia microdasys
- Native to: Mexico
- Type: Succulent cactus
- Growth: Slow-growing, pads resemble bunny ears
☀️ Light
- Needs: Bright, direct sunlight (at least 6 hours daily).
- Place it near a south- or west-facing window.
- If light is limited, use a grow light to supplement.
⚠️ Tip: If the cactus starts stretching or leaning, it’s not getting enough light.
💧 Watering
- Spring–Summer: Water when the soil is completely dry, about every 2–3 weeks.
- Fall–Winter: Water once a month or less — overwatering causes root rot.
💡 Tip: Use the “soak and dry” method — water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom, then let the soil dry completely before watering again.
🌱 Soil
- Use well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
- You can make your own by mixing:
- 2 parts potting soil
- 1 part coarse sand or perlite
- 1 part pumice or small gravel
🪴 Pot
- Choose a terracotta or clay pot with drainage holes.
- These materials help excess moisture evaporate and prevent rot.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Prefers 65–85°F (18–29°C).
- Can tolerate down to 50°F (10°C), but not frost.
- Low humidity is best — avoid misting.
🌸 Fertilizing
- In spring and summer, feed once a month with a diluted cactus fertilizer (low in nitrogen).
- Do not fertilize in winter.
✂️ Pruning & Repotting
- Pruning: Rarely needed; remove dead pads with sterilized tongs.
- Repotting: Every 2–3 years, in spring, when it outgrows its pot.
- Be careful — those tiny glochids (hair-like spines) can stick to skin. Wear gloves or use tongs!
🌼 Propagation
- Easiest method: Pad cuttings
- Twist off a healthy pad with tongs.
- Let it callous over for 2–3 days.
- Plant in dry cactus mix.
- Lightly mist occasionally until roots form (2–3 weeks).
