  • Botanical name: Acacia nilotica
  • Common names: Babool, Indian Gum Arabic Tree, Kikar
  • Type: Fast-growing deciduous tree
  • Family: Fabaceae
  • Lifespan: 20–30 years
  • Height: Up to 20 meters outdoors (much smaller in pots)

🪴 How to Grow Babool (from Seed or Sapling)

🌾 1. From Seeds

  1. Scarify the seeds: Soak them in hot (not boiling) water for 12–24 hours to soften the hard coat.
  2. Sow depth: 1–2 cm deep in a seed tray or small pots filled with sandy loam soil.
  3. Germination: 1–3 weeks, depending on temperature (ideal is 25–35°C).
  4. Transplant: Once seedlings reach 6–8 inches tall, move them to a bigger pot or ground.

🌿 2. From Saplings

If you have a small sapling, plant it directly in well-drained soil or a large pot (≥12 inches deep).

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Needs full sunlight for 6–8 hours daily.
  • Does not grow well in shade — ensure it’s placed in the brightest spot if kept indoors (balcony, terrace, or near a south-facing window).

💧 Watering

  • Low water requirement once established.
  • Seedlings: Keep soil slightly moist (not soggy).
  • Mature plants: Water only when top 2–3 inches of soil are dry — roughly once every 7–10 days in summer, and even less in winter.
  • Avoid overwatering — Babool is very drought tolerant and root rot can occur in soggy soil.

🌡️ Temperature & Climate

  • Thrives in hot, dry climates — ideal temperature 25–40°C.
  • Can tolerate up to 45°C and mild frost.
  • Not ideal for very humid or waterlogged conditions.

🌾 Soil Requirements

  • Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soil.
  • Avoid heavy clay soils.
  • pH range: 6.0–8.5 (slightly acidic to alkaline).
  • If planting in a pot:
    • Mix 50% garden soil + 25% river sand + 25% compost for best results.

🌼 Fertilizing

  • Very little fertilizer is needed.
  • For potted plants, use a balanced organic fertilizer or vermicompost once every 2–3 months during the growing season (spring to early monsoon).
  • Too much nitrogen can make it grow tall but weak.

✂️ Pruning

  • Prune young plants to shape them — remove dead or crossing branches.
  • Mature trees can be lightly trimmed after monsoon to promote new growth.
  • Be careful — branches have sharp thorns!

🪲 Pests & Diseases

  • Generally pest-resistant, but sometimes affected by:
    • Aphids or caterpillars (use neem oil spray)
    • Fungal leaf spots in humid weather (improve airflow, use mild fungicide)
  • Avoid overwatering to prevent root fungus.
