The Araucaria (often called Norfolk Island Pine) is a popular indoor “Christmas tree” plant.
🌿 Basic Care Overview
- Scientific name: Araucaria heterophylla
- Not a true pine, but behaves like a soft indoor evergreen.
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright, indirect sunlight
- Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon sun
- Rotate the pot every week so it grows evenly (prevents leaning)
💧 Watering
- Keep soil slightly moist, not soggy
- Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry
- Reduce watering in winter
- Avoid letting the pot sit in water (root rot risk)
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal temperature: 16–24°C
- Avoid cold drafts, AC vents, or heaters
- Loves moderate to high humidity
- Mist occasionally or place near a water tray with pebbles
🪴 Soil & Pot
- Use well-draining potting mix (garden soil + sand + compost works well)
- Pot must have drainage holes
- Repot only every 2–3 years (they like being slightly root-bound)
