Karpuravalli (Indian Ajwain)
1️⃣ Best Way to Grow – From Cuttings (Recommended)
Seeds are rare and unreliable. Cuttings grow quickly.
Steps:
- Take a 4–6 inch healthy stem with 3–4 leaf nodes
- Remove lower leaves
- Let the cutting dry for 2–3 hours
- Plant directly in soil or place in water until roots form (5–7 days)
- Transplant to pot/ground once roots are 2–3 cm long
2️⃣ Soil Requirements
- Well-draining soil is crucial
- Best mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost or vermicompost
- 30% sand or cocopeat
- Slightly alkaline to neutral pH
❌ Avoid heavy clay soil (causes root rot)
3️⃣ Pot & Spacing
- Pot size: 8–12 inches
- If planting in ground: space plants 30–45 cm apart
4️⃣ Sunlight
- Bright sunlight or partial shade
- 3–6 hours of direct sun is ideal
- Too much harsh afternoon sun can scorch leaves
5️⃣ Watering
- Water only when topsoil is dry
- Overwatering is the #1 killer
- In summer: 2–3 times/week
- In monsoon/winter: once/week or less
💡 Leaves feel soft when overwatered
6️⃣ Temperature
- Ideal: 18–35°C
- Protect from frost and cold winds
- Can be grown indoors near a sunny window
7️⃣ Fertilizer
- Once every 20–30 days
- Use:
- Compost / vermicompost
- Diluted cow dung liquid
- Avoid excess nitrogen (makes stems weak)
8️⃣ Pruning & Harvesting
- Pinch tips regularly to make it bushy
- Harvest leaves after 4–6 weeks
- Always cut above a leaf node
🌿 Frequent harvesting improves growth
