Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is easy to care for indoors if you get a few basics right.
🌿 Light
- Bright, indirect light is best
- Avoid direct sunlight (it can scorch the leaves)
- Low light is tolerated, but growth will be slower
💧 Water
Lucky bamboo can grow in water or soil.
If grown in water:
- Use filtered, distilled, or dechlorinated water (tap water chemicals can harm it)
- Keep roots covered with 2–5 cm (1–2 in) of water
- Change water every 7–10 days
- Clean the container to prevent algae
If grown in soil:
- Use well-draining potting soil
- Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
- Never let it sit in soggy soil
🌡 Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal temperature: 18–30°C (65–85°F)
- Keep away from cold drafts, heaters, and AC vents
- Enjoys moderate humidity, but normal indoor air is fine
🌱 Fertilizer
- Feed very lightly
- Use a diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer every 2–3 months
- Too much fertilizer causes yellow leaves
✂️ Pruning & Care
- Trim yellow or damaged leaves with clean scissors
- If stalks grow too tall, you can cut them—new shoots will sprout
- Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust
