A moon cactus (scientific name: Gymnocalycium mihanovichii) is a colorful, grafted cactus that’s surprisingly easy to care for if you follow a few key rules.
🌱 What makes moon cactus special?
- The bright top (red, yellow, orange, pink) can’t survive on its own
- It’s grafted onto a green base cactus, which provides nutrients
🪴 Pot & Soil
- Use a pot with drainage holes
- Choose a small pot (they like being slightly root-bound)
- Soil:
- Use cactus/succulent mix
- Or mix: garden soil + sand + perlite (well-draining is key)
☀️ Light Requirements
- Needs bright, indirect sunlight
- Avoid strong afternoon sun (can burn the colorful top)
- Ideal spot:
- Near a window with filtered light
- Morning sun is okay
💧 Watering
- Water only when soil is completely dry
- Typical schedule:
- Summer: every 7–10 days
- Winter: every 2–3 weeks
- Important:
- Never let it sit in water
- Overwatering = root rot (most common mistake)
🌡️ Temperature & Climate
- Best temperature: 18–32°C
- Protect from:
- Cold (<10°C)
- Heavy rain (important in West Bengal monsoon 🌧️)
🌿 Fertilizer
- Feed lightly during growing season (spring–summer)
- Use:
- Diluted cactus fertilizer once a month
- Skip in winter
