Banyan Tree in a pot is possible, and many people even grow it as a bonsai-style plant indoors or on balconies.
🌱 1. Getting the Plant
You can start a banyan plant in two ways:
1️⃣ From a small sapling (easiest)
Buy a young banyan sapling from a nursery.
2️⃣ From a cutting
- Take a 6–8 inch stem cutting from a healthy banyan branch.
- Remove lower leaves.
- Put it in moist soil or water until roots form.
🪴 2. Choosing the Pot
- Start with a 6–10 inch pot.
- Ensure drainage holes.
- Clay or ceramic pots work best.
As the plant grows, move to a bigger pot every 1–2 years.
🌿 3. Best Soil Mix
Banyan likes well-draining soil.
Good mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost or vermicompost
- 30% sand or cocopeat
☀️ 4. Light Requirements
- Outdoor: Partial to full sunlight (best growth).
- Indoor: Place near a bright window or balcony.
It needs 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.
💧 5. Watering
- Water when the top soil becomes dry.
- Do not overwater.
- Usually 2–3 times per week in warm weather.
✂️ 6. Pruning (Very Important in Pots)
The banyan naturally becomes huge, so pruning keeps it small.
- Trim new shoots regularly.
- Remove long branches.
- You can shape it like a mini tree (bonsai look).
